My Passion for Handcrafting
The Little Sew Room is a space where I have gathered my favorite activities over the years: crafting, sewing, teaching, and creating beautiful things.
I used to be a secondary school teacher in Singapore. I started teaching in 2004. In 2010, I became a makeup artist and founded The Little Brush Makeup. Besides doing makeup for clients, I also taught one-on-one makeup classes.
Whether teaching, doing makeup, or sewing, there is a common thread: the joy of slowly perfecting a craft and sharing my skills with others.
Discovering Sewing
I began learning to sew in 2018. My mother is a seamstress and has her own tailoring shop. However, learning from family can sometimes be challenging. So, I enrolled in several garment-making courses at TaF.tc, where I learned to make dresses, jackets, pants, and qipaos.
Initially, I wanted to learn a new skill. Over time, I discovered my love for the sewing process. Cutting fabric, pressing seams, aligning pieces, and stitching each step requires focus. This focus brings a sense of calm.
The Impact of the Pandemic
During the pandemic, my makeup work came to a sudden halt. I took on a charitable project, making masks for workers. I ended up creating hundreds of masks. This experience marked my true entry into the world of handmade crafts.
I then started selling my handmade masks. It was heartwarming to see strangers purchase my creations because they liked the fabrics, colors, and designs. It made me realize that my work could be appreciated and used by others.
Embracing Bag Making
In 2021, I connected with a bag-making instructor through an online course. I began learning how to create bags. I quickly fell in love with bag making due to the endless possibilities. Different fabrics, patterns, colors, materials, pockets, linings, and structures can create entirely unique designs.
Unlike clothing, bags do not have body shape or size limitations. You can choose a design that resonates with you.
Launching Handmade by Jovie
In 2023, I launched Handmade by Jovie. To date, I have created hundreds of bags. I enjoy designing one-of-a-kind pieces, ensuring that no two bags are identical. For me, making bags is not just about stitching fabric together. It is a creative process that combines colors, materials, and details into a usable work of art.
Sharing My Experience
The Little Sew Room was born from this passion. I aim to share my sewing and bag-making experiences with those who have always wanted to create something with their hands but have not yet had the chance. You don't need to be skilled or have a background in sewing. If you are willing to take your time, you can complete your own projects step by step.
Sewing is a therapeutic activity for me. I hope that those who come to The Little Sew Room can slow down, focus, and enjoy the process of completing their creations.
The Joy of Crafting
Crafting is not just a hobby; it is a way to express oneself. Each piece I create carries a part of my journey. I believe that everyone has the potential to create something beautiful.
By sharing my skills, I hope to inspire others to explore their creativity. Whether it is sewing a bag or making a simple accessory, the act of creating can bring joy and fulfillment.
Conclusion
Handmade By Jovie aims to be the go-to brand in Singapore for unique, handcrafted fabric bags. I am committed to growing a community of customers who appreciate slow-crafted design and personalized accessories.
I invite you to join me on this journey. Let’s create something special together.
